You might miss this tiny café as you walk
through New York City’s East Village;
that would be a shame. It’s not vegan, or even vegetarian, yet vegans for miles
around flock here and jockey for seats at the handful of tables.
Why? Besides the extensive vegan sandwich menu—my favorite is the vegan chicken artichoke—they also have the best selection of vegan desserts in the city: gooey, delicious creations of the sort omnivores think you have to sacrifice when you go vegan. There are whoopie pies, the Chocolate Peanut Butter Bomb, and a plethora of other delights, such as vegan soft-serve ice cream. The joys of Atlas can be hard-won, however. While there is a small outdoor seating section, during the winter patrons are limited to the five or six tables, crammed in cheek by jowl. Want to wait for a table? You’ll be doing it outside. There’s scarcely enough room for customers to order; gesticulate too enthusiastically when you request the vegan chicken ginger sandwich and you’ll either deck someone or wind up with your hand in their soup. None of this matters though, when we’re talking about cheap, convenient and fabulous vegan food. Sandwiches average at USD$7, while desserts are about USD$5. They’re open until late. Any vegan visitor to NYC should be sure to stop by.
