PCRM protests with tomatoes |

On the 8 July 2008,
over one thousand tomatoes were used as part of a bold and outrageous
demonstration conducted by PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine).
The group is a nonprofit organisation that promotes preventive medicine, including
a meat-free diet.
A public
statement was issued by PCRM in response to the Food and Drug Administration's
struggle to identify the source of a recent salmonella epidemic. It has been a
controversial topic because over 900 Americans have fallen ill. ‘It's The Meat,
Stupid!’ was spelled out using tomatoes in front of the US Department of Health
and Human Services at 200 Independence Avenue in Washington DC.
The message PCRM hoped to promote was that the meat industry is responsible for
generating salmonella. If someone is to be convicted for the outbreak of illnesses,
it should be meat producers. Dr Neal Barnard, founder and president of PCRM,
highlighted his concern that cows and chickens are the stimulants of salmonella
issues which have imposed a threat to society's health. Meat or tomatoes,
what's more controversial?
