Salt & Slush #2: Winter Recipes PDF Print
Saturday, 28 June 2008

Salt & Slush #2 is a good little recipe zine for anyone looking for tips on keeping warm or cooking a tasty and affordable meal. It offers a variety of lunch, dinner, and desert recipes that cater for vegetarians, vegans, meat-eaters, and even a special recipe suited to the likes of your favourite furry winter companion: your dog.

The zine is conveniently divided into three subsections: Soups, Salads and Preserves, Dinners, Meals to Share, and Baking. Also, there are several hot drink recipes in the introduction such as the immune-boosting Ginger Tea, perfect for guarding you against colds this winter.

There is a glossary at the beginning and all of the recipes are clearly labelled, making it easy to find what is of interest to you. In most recipes, the ingredient list is separated from the method, making the recipes easy-to-follow.

One of the only problems with the zine is that several of the recipes are too long and require a lot of preparation time, such as ‘Canning' and 'Making Baked Beans’. But these too can be fun when you get that sudden unrelenting urge to pull out your most obscure ingredients and to prepare something from scratch. Also, the majority of the recipes do not state how many they serve, making it difficult to estimate the number of days you’ll be eating left-overs. But this is something you’ll work out once you try the recipes.

The best part about the zine is the quirkiness of all of the recipes. Imagine your guest’s surprise when you offer them a taste of your own Home Brewed beer or Chocolate Beet cake!
