Eco-AtkinsThe Age in Melbourne yesterday reported that Professor David Jenkins, from the University of Toronto, completed a study involving overweight patients being placed on a vegan diet, called ‘Eco-Atkins’.

Jenkins’ idea was to recreate the high protein concept of the Atkins diet by replacing dangerous animal proteins with plant-based ones. The results for the men and women who participated in the study were a dramatic weight loss of 10 per cent of their body weights, and improvement in insulin sensitivity.

The Atkins diet rose to fame helping celebrities slim down until the creator died from rumoured heart disease. Jenkins who came up with the idea of Eco-Atkins is noted for having created the Glycaemic Index. The full story that appeared in The Age can be viewed here.
