A vegan alternative to taxidermy? Girlsavage's blog and etsy shop features stuffed animals, many of which simply feature a head, mounted on a wooden board. The deer, moose and rabbits look stunned, much like an actual animal would.

The inspiration for the creator’s work comes ‘from old cartoons, nature, folk tales, my vintage ceramic miniatures and my crazy imagination’. The concept came about when she was asked to create a mounted moose head by a music video producer. She has been intrigued by the idea ever since.

Of the mounted Fawn Fletidermy, the creator writes on the blog that she loves their confused expression. ‘After all he is a feltidermy, he doesn’t know that he represents a dead animal. He does know that he is a whole lot cuter than a dead animal.’ It remains to be seen whether or not this development of having ‘dead’ stuffed animals is disturbing or amusing. Should an alternative to the mounted trophies exist at all, regardless of how light-hearted the intention? As well as this, you can now buy a stuffed mouse in badge form, if you fancy walking around with a ‘dead’ mouse on your shirt. Offensive? Funny? Either way, it’s far better than the alternative.

Moose feltidermy ‘would be a hilarious addition to any office, home, lodge or den’ and retails for US$55. The mouse brooch retails for US$30. See the blog for more details.
